Dr. Vishal Gupta

Dr. Gupta is proud to call Florida his home for the past 30+ years. Raised in the sunshine state, Dr. Gupta attended the University of Florida where he graduated with highest honors with a Bachelor’s Degree in Molecular and Cell Biology. He received his Medical Doctorate degree from the University of Florida in Gainesville, FL in 1999. Dr. Gupta did his residency in Internal Medicine at Shands Hospital at the University of Florida. Dr. Gupta continued his training by completing a fellowship in Gastroenterology in 2005 at Shands Hospital at the University of Florida, one of the top ranked Gastroenterology programs in the country.

Dr. Gupta started a solo gastroenterology practice in west Volusia in 2006, which has now become Gastroenterology of Greater Orlando, PA. Dr. Gupta has interests in all aspects of Gastroenterology and Hepatology including but not limited to GERD, ulcer disease, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Colorectal Cancer, Hepatitis C and diseases of the pancreas and liver. He is experienced in all endoscopic procedures including upper GI endoscopy (EGD), dilation of strictures and management of gastrointestinal bleeding, colonoscopy, as well as diagnostic and therapeutic ERCP. Dr. Gupta has written state of the art review papers in Gastroenterology. He is considered an authority in motility disorders (Irritable Bowel Syndrome, gastroparesis, and bacterial overgrowth), pancreatic disease, and inflammatory bowel disease. He is also the lead investigator in developing many new and innovative new gastrointestinal therapies.

Dr. Gupta is board certified in gastroenterology by the American Board of Internal Medicine. He is a member of the American College of Gastroenterology and American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. He has been recognized by receiving the William Osler Award, The Patient’s Choice Award from 2008 till present, awarded the Patient’s Choice 5th Anniversary Award, Compassionate Doctor Recognition 2011 – present, and is a Healthgrades recognized physician.

A family man and loving husband, Dr. Gupta considers himself blessed to be the father of two children. In his spare time he enjoys running, water sports, and reading.

Dr. Vernu Visvalingam

Dr. Vernu Visvalingam is pleased to join Gastroenterology of Greater Orlando. Dr. Visvalingam has focused his medical career on the service of the needs of each patient and consistently strives to bring a high level of expertise to the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders.

Dr. Visvalingam is originally from Sri Lanka. He grew up in New York City since the age of 3. He completed undergraduate training at The Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education at the City College of New York. He went on to receive his medical degree at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York. Residency and Gastrointestinal fellowship training were completed at the Long Island Jewish Medical Center in Queens, NY.

In 2002 he began private practice in Florida. He has proven himself to be a highly skilled physician and brings over 15 years of experience in the field of gastroenterology. He is a skilled clinician and provides the following endoscopic services:
• Upper endoscopy
• Colonoscopy
• Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreaticography
• Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy tube insertion and management.

He is a member of the American Gastroenterology Association and American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.

Dr. Visvalingam resides in Lake Mary, FL with his wife and two daughters. He enjoys travel, reading and spending time with his family.

Dr. Karl Mersich

Dr. Karl Mersich is glad to join Gastroenterology of Greater Orlando. He is a native of Hungary, where he completed his “basic” medical education, graduating with M.D. degree from Semmelweis Medical University in Budapest in 1977, followed by surgical training in Miskolc, Hungary. He immigrated to the United States in 1981 (defected from then communist Hungary). He completed his medical residency in 1988 and then his gastroenterology fellowship in 1992 at St. Mary’s Hospital/University of Rochester School of Medicine in Rochester, NY. Dr. Mersich has been in university faculty/teaching practice for over 10 years, followed by private practice for 15 years in Rochester, NY. He brings his 25 years of gastroenterology experience to take care of patients of GGO, where he takes pride in providing compassionate, patient centered care.

His interests involves all areas of gastroenterology and hepatology, including inflammatory bowel disease (Ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease), prevention of colon cancer, treatment of colon polyps, gastroesophageal reflux disease, Barrett’s esophagus, peptic ulcers, celiac disease, irritable bowel syndrome, diseases of the pancreas, hepatitis/Hep C and liver cancer.
He is skilled in performing gastroscopy, colonoscopy with removal of polyps, dilatation of strictures, investigating and treating GI bleed, capsule endoscopy.

Dr. Mersich is board certified in gastroenterology by the American Board of Internal Medicine. He is member of American College of Gastroenterology ( ? and American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.

Dr. Mersich considers himself blessed by his loving wife of 43 years and by his growing family, having 4 married children and 8 grandchildren. He loves spending time with his wife, his family as much as possible, loves traveling, volunteering and good food.

Dr. Kaleem Ahmed

Dr. Kaleem Ahmed completed his training in Gastroenterology in 1989 at Sinai Hospital where he received multiple awards for stellar care of patients. He has over 25 years of experience caring for patients with a variety of Gastrointestinal Illnesses and has served as the division chief of gastroenterology. He prides himself for being a highly trained, skilled, and compassionate physician.

He has interests in all aspects of gastroenterology and hepatology including, but not limited to, inflammatory bowel disease, acid diseases of the esophagus, peptic ulcer disease, small intestinal disorders, irritable bowel syndrome, biliary diseases, colon cancer, anorectal diseases, and disorders of the pancreas and liver.

He is skilled in all diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures, including upper GI endoscopy, colonoscopy, Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreaticography (ERCP), capsule endoscopy, control of GI bleeding, removal of colon polyps, and dilation of strictures.

Dr. Ahmed is board certified in both Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology. He is also a member of the American College of Gastroenterology.

Dr. Ahmed resides in Lake Mary with his wife and has two beautiful children. He is a world traveler who enjoys spending time with family, reading, and golfing.

Dr. Dany Shamoun

Gastroenterology of greater Orlando is delighted to welcome Dr. Dany Shamoun who joined our practice this summer, August 2019, after he decided with his family to make central Florida home. Dr. Shamoun is a native of Lebanon where he attended the American University of Beirut for his undergraduate studies in Biology and subsequently graduated with a Doctor of Medicine degree in 1994. He then moved to the United States where he finished his residency in internal medicine and was also chief resident at the Medstar Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. He subsequently finished a fellowship in Gastroenterology, Hepatology and therapeutic endoscopy at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland in 2001. Dr. Shamoun’s Gastroenterology training was focused on advanced endoscopic techniques especially endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) and treatment of precancerous GI lesions including Barrett’s esophagus and colon polyps.

Dr. Shamoun brings to our practice 18 years of experience in Gastroenterology and advanced endoscopy in academic and tertiary care centers. Dr. Shamoun treats a wide array of common GI diseases including gastroesophageal reflux disease, liver disease (e.g. Hepatitis C), Crohn’s disease and colitis. Dr. Shamoun also routinely performs preventive GI procedures especially screening colonoscopy.

Furthermore, Dr. Shamoun has special expertise in the evaluation of gastrointestinal and pancreatic diseases with Endoscopic Ultrasound including fine needle biopsy technique. He also has special interest in the treatment of acid reflux disease and its complications, namely Barrett’s esophagus and esophageal cancer. Dr. Shamoun has expertise in Radio frequency ablation (RFA-HALO), a new technique for eradicating Barrett’s esophagus to prevent its progression to esophageal cancer.

Dr. Shamoun has authored and co-authored research in various areas of Gastroenterology and he did also serve for several years on the editorial review board of the leading GI endoscopy journal, Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, which is the main publication sponsored by the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.

GI procedures performed and mastered by Dr. Shamoun include:
– Upper endoscopy (EGD) with various diagnostic and therapeutic interventions such as biopsy, esophageal dilation, control of bleeding, esophageal variceal banding and Botox injection.
– Colonoscopy and polyp removal.
– Endoscopic Ultrasound and fine needle biopsy.
– Bravo pH for evaluation of acid reflux disease.
– Esophageal manometry for evaluation of swallowing disorders.
– Endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) for treatment of submucosal GI lesions and early cancer.
– Radio frequency ablation (RFA-HALO) for eradication of Barrett’s esophagus.
– Video capsule endoscopy of the small bowel.
– Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy feeding tube placement.

Dr. Shamoun moved to central Florida with his wife and ten-year old boy. When not attending to his patients, Dr. Shamoun enjoys spending time with his family, golfing and travel.

Lauren Gravois, ARNP

Lauren is originally from Sarasota, FL. She received her undergraduate education at the University of Florida where she graduated cum laude with a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology. She then went on to pursue a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Nursing followed by a Master’s Degree as an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner at the University of Florida where she trained and conducted research at Shands Hospital in Gainesville, Florida. She is board certified by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners.

Lauren has had valuable experiences in diverse aspects of patient care including family medicine, pediatrics, women’s health, intensive care, community health, end of life care, psychiatric health, and emergency medicine. Lauren is committed to her patients’ overall wellbeing and her dedication to building strong, trusting relationships through a patient-first approach allows for effective and streamlined treatments for all types of gastroenterology conditions.

Lauren feels fortunate to now call Orlando her home. She enjoys painting, golfing, tennis, traveling, exploring the outdoors, and spending time with family and friends.

Caroline Epstein, PA-C

Caroline is a Florida native who received her Bachelor’s Degree in Health Science at the University of South Florida in December 2011. She received her Masters of Medical Science in Physician Assistant Studies with Honors at Nova Southeastern University in August 2014. She became board certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants in September 2014. Her past clinical experience includes Family/Pediatric Medicine and Neurology/Pain Management. She began her career in Gastroenterology after moving to Atlanta, GA in May 2015. After two and half years of providing GI care to patients in the inpatient and outpatient setting, she relocated back to Florida and joined Gastroenterology of Greater Orlando in November 2017. Her goals for improving patient care are to ensure that her patients are not only satisfied with their care, but are left well informed.

Purvi Amin, PA-C

Purvi was born and raised in Columbia, South Carolina. She received her Bachelors in Microbiology from Clemson University. Prior to PA School she worked as a Medical Laboratory Technologist in Microbiology and Hematology for 2 years. She moved to Florida in 2014 after receiving her Masters In Physician Assistant from Augusta University in Georgia.

Purvi has experience in pain management and rehabilitation, treating patients with medication management and intervention. She has a holistic approach to medicine with emphasis on preventative care and patient education. During her free time, Purvi enjoys spending time with her family and friends, volunteering at Shepherd’s Hope, watching college football, and going to the beach.


Eileen Kim, PA-C

Eileen is a Florida native who received her bachelors degree in Human Nutrition at the University of Florida. Before becoming a PA, she worked as a medical assistant her at GGO. She went on to receive her master of medical science in physician assistant studies with honors at Nova Southeastern University. She is board certified by the National Commission of Certification of Physician Assistants. She has returned to GGO to educate and provide exceptional healthcare to her patients. In her free time, she enjoys cooking and spending time with friends and family.
